Parish & Clergy Transitions
Churches and clergy currently in transition in Southern Virginia.

Transitions – January 5, 2023

As Epiphany dawns, a number of our parishes and clergy have embarked upon seasons of transition.  Accompanying them, the Diocesan Transitions Team remains fully engaged, guiding both parishes and clergy through their respective discernment processes.

In recent weeks, several clergy reached retirement:

  • The Rev. Carlotta Cochran retired as Priest-in-Charge of St. Stephen’s, Norfolk, on November 30, 2022.
  • The Rev. Eric Moehring concluded his tenure as Interim Rector of St. John’s, Chester, on November 30, 2022.
  • The Rev. Bill Queen concluded his tenure as Interim Rector of St. Stephen’s, Petersburg, on December 31, 2022.
  • The Rev. John Boucher retired as Priest-in-Charge of St. Michael’s, Colonial Heights, on December 31, 2022.
  • The Rev. Ron Ramsey announced his retirement as Rector of St. Cyprian’s, Hampton, effective January 31, 2023.

Two parishes welcomed clergy called during the latter part of 2022:

  • St. Paul’s, Petersburg, welcomed the Rev. Sam Sheridan of the Diocese of Virginia, who began serving as Priest-in-Charge on December 11, 2022.
  • St. Barnabas’, North Chesterfield, welcomed the Rev. Deborah Rankin on the Diocese of West Virginia, who began serving as Priest-in-Charge on December 11, 2022.

And in two other developments:

  • Bishop Haynes ordained the Rev. Jean Vinson to the priesthood on December 21, 2022, at Emmanuel, Franklin, where she became Priest-in-Charge, celebrating Eucharist in the parish for the first time on Christmas Eve.
  • St. John’s, Chester, announced that the Vestry has called the Rev. Mary Margaret Winn of the Diocese of Virginia to serve as Priest-in-Charge beginning February 1, 2023.

Currently Search Committees are active in several parishes, each of which is open to receiving names:

  • Christ Church, Smithfield
  • St. Anne’s, Appomattox
  • St. Stephen’s, Petersburg

Meanwhile, Vestry Discernment Teams have been formed or are being formed at several other parishes, among them:

  • Eastern Shore Chapel, Virginia Beach
  • St. Andrew’s, Norfolk
  • St. Cyprian’s, Hampton
  • St. George’s, Pungoteague
  • St. James’, Accomac

Parishes currently seeking part-time clergy include:

  • All Saints, South Hill
  • Christ Church, Smithfield
  • Church of the Advent, Norfolk
  • St. Andrew & St. Paul’s, Kenbridge
  • St. Bride’s, Chesapeake
  • St. John’s, Petersburg
  • St. Stephen’s, Norfolk

Clergy interested in discerning a call to serve any of these parishes are encouraged to contact a member of the Diocesan Transitions Team: Canons Hoffman, Foster, or Harlan.
